UPM Biofuels joins Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials

UPM has become member of RSB, the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials. RSB is a global standard and certification scheme for sustainable production of biomaterials and biofuels. It is also an independent multi-stakeholder coalition, which works to support the sustainability of biomaterials.

RSB is considered one of the strongest sustainability schemes, verifying that biomaterials are ethical, sustainable, and credibly sourced. It is also one of the EU approved voluntary schemes for biofuels to show compliance with sustainability requirements set for the production of biofuels in the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive. UPM sees great potential in RSB and is keen to be part of the future development of the scheme.

“RSB Membership is a step forward for UPM Biofuels to further engage sustainability. We are committed to strengthening our performance in sustainability and promoting standards that provide tools and methods to bring it into action,” says Sari Mannonen, Head of UPM Biofuels.

RSB membership is a natural next step for UPM’s previous work with the certification scheme.  Together with WWF Finland, UPM has conducted a feasibility study on RSB certification for UPM’s biofuel production. It concluded that RSB is a feasible certification system for UPM BioVerno which is based on the use of our own industry’s residue, crude tall oil.

UPM Biofuels is also a member of ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification), another strong sustainability scheme for biomaterials and biofuels.

Heinzel Group joins industry alliance “4evergreen”

Heinzel Group is a member of the “4evergreen” alliance, which strives to increase the share of fiber-based packaging in order to sustainably reduce the impact on climate and the environment. In addition, the alliance aims to increase knowledge and raise awareness of the advantages of fiber-based materials in society. Among other things, the initiative advocates the development of optimized collection systems and appropriate recycling infrastructures. Members of the “4evergeen” alliance are represented throughout the entire fiber-based packaging value chain: paper, board and packaging producers, technology and material suppliers, waste sorting and collection companies, and retailers.

Industry Welcomes Conservation & Logging Agreement in the Great Bear Rainforest

Today’s announcement of the Great Bear Rainforest Land Use Order by the Government of BC and First Nations is being applauded by five BC forest product companies as a unique solution for a globally significant area. BC Timber Sales, Catalyst Paper Corp., Howe Sound Pulp & Paper Corp., Interfor Corp., and Western Forest Products Inc. formed the Coast Forest Conservation Initiative (CFCI) in 2000. For 15 years, CFCI worked with ForestEthics Solutions, Greenpeace and Sierra Club to deliver joint recommendations to the Province and First Nations. “It is collaboration not conflict that ultimately drove the solutions in the Great Bear Rainforest,” said Rick Jeffery, representing CFCI. “This agreement will deliver certainty for coastal forests, local communities and jobs for years to come.”
