With support from Matas Legalis, small producers transform property in São Joaquim into agroforestry

Proving the success of working together to advance sustainability, the Legal Forests program has been contributing to the restoration of the Villadagio property, owned by rural producers Lucas Caliari and Laís Ferrari, located in Serra Catarinense, in the city of São Joaquim (SC). The area, initially used for grazing cattle, is being transformed into an example of agroforestry – a production system that conserves permanent forest species, planted along with agricultural crops.

Held by Klabin, the largest producer and exporter of paper for packaging and sustainable solutions in paper packaging in Brazil, in partnership with the Association for the Preservation of the Environment and Life (Apremavi), Matas Legal arrived in Santa Catarina in 2005, with the objective of developing conservation actions, environmental education and forest promotion, which help to protect and recover native forests, improving the quality of life of the population and enhancing local forestry development, based on the planning of properties and landscapes.

Leandro Casanova, employee of Apremavi and coordinator of Matas Legalis, explains that “the beginning of the property transformation project occurred when Lucas and Laís visited the Environmental Center and the Jardim das Florestas Nursery, in February of this year, having access to the Matas proposal. Laws and the possibilities that the program offers”.

Born in Maringá (PR), Lucas Caliari and Laís Ferrari acquired the Villadagio property about a year ago. “We came from the interior of Paraná, from a region surrounded by monoculture, to Pericó, in Santa Catarina, to experience the agriculture we believe in: agroforestry. We were very happy to find Apremavi, which presented us with seedlings native to the Atlantic Forest for the regeneration of our area through the cultivation of fruit trees and bracatinas, flowers and yerba mate”, explains Laís.

Lucas explains that the intention now is to restore 15 hectares of the property. “The transformation of Villadagio into an agroforestry is an old dream and this was the first step of a long-awaited journey. It is the symbiosis of our biome with our future home, accommodation, canteen and agroindustry. In addition, it has been motivating to restore the landscape and contribute to the quality of life on the property and in the community”, he comments.
