A Perfect Storm Headed Our Way

Had enough snow-sleet-rain-wind-fire this past winter? Spring and summer could see even far worse storms in Washington, DC, that will affect all remote sellers — catalogers, publishers and e-commerce companies — for decades. Unless a strong industry push back is made, the resulting consequences will undermine your company’s profitability and add new complexity for both you and your customers.

These two major industry issues should have everyone’s attention:
1.A potentially significant change (not for the better) in how future postal rates are to be set;
2.The ramifications of a forthcoming Supreme Court ruling on the future of remote/internet sales taxes that could overturn over 50 years of precedent businesses nationwide have relied upon.

Our industry must mobilize to take action to respond to these industry-wide threats! The time to do so is right now. Inattention will be costly. Without a concerted, coordinated response, the outcome for both will be dire.

In each matter, it will remain with Congress to provide a solution. Moving bills through Congress is a challenge even in the best of times, but at this point in our political history, with charges and counter charges, with facts and fiction being obscured, even more effort is necessary. There are 535 different members of the federal legislature. Members of Congress respond best to the people that vote for them. So we need immediate constituent pressure on every member of Congress to let them know an important sector of the economy in their home jurisdiction is at risk.

ACMA is calling on every company with interests in remote selling, including all industry suppliers and other service providers, trade media to get engaged and help mitigate these very real threats facing our industry today. Whether with ACMA or some other trade group, history shows that professional associations are the best means to coordinate an industry response. Moreover, whether you are an AMCA member or not, ACMA will help you get connected to Congress. It is that important!

The Enduring Popularity Of Print

Print continues to be the preferred media for magazine and book readers, challenging conventional industry thinking that digital is dominant. There’s little doubt that the global media and publishing industries are putting a lot of effort into pushing readers online. Flat Sales Identified as Top Industry Problem

In PW’s annual salary and jobs survey, 25% of the 442 respondents picked flat sales as the #1 issue facing the industry in 2017. It narrowly edged out competition from other media, identified by 24% of respondents as the most important issue. While book publishing has fared better than some other media in the digital age, there has been no growth over the past five years. According to the Association of American Publishers’ recent StatShot report, total industry sales fell to $26.24 billion in 2016, down 5.1% from 2015. Between 2012 and 2016, sales fell every year except 2014, and over the five-year period sales dropped 5.3%. Within the trade segment, sales rose 1.5% in 2016 over 2015 and were up 1.3% in 2016 over 2012. The lack of real growth in the industry, in some ways, has likely been caused by the other issues highlighted in the survey. Certainly, publishers must compete with the many new entertainment options available to consumers to get attention for their books, and the explosion of video games and the growing use of social media has made reading books less popular. S&P Global Reports Third Quarter Results

Net income decreased 54% to $414 million and diluted earnings per share declined 52% to $1.61 as a result of the prior period benefiting from a pre-tax gain of $722 million on the sale of J.D. Power. Adjusted net income increased 16% to $442 million and adjusted diluted earnings per share increased 19% to $1.71. The adjustments in the third quarter of 2017 were for deal-related amortization and restructuring. Both net income and adjusted net income benefited from an accounting change associated with the recognition of excess tax benefits from stock-based compensation in 2017. "The underlying environment for our businesses is healthy with an improving global GDP, higher commodity prices, strong equity markets, and modest growth in U.S. bond issuance. With this backdrop, our Company is thriving as all of our business segments contributed solid organic revenue and adjusted operating profit growth during the quarter," said Douglas L. Peterson, President and Chief Executive Officer of S&P Global.
