“Best Use of Certified Timber” – PEFC continues partnership with the World Architecture Festival

Was timber a key material in one of your construction projects? Did you choose wood for its many aesthetic, natural and architectural properties, or simply because it is the only renewable building material? If yes, you can enter your project for a World Architecture Festival prize!

For the second time, PEFC is sponsoring the WAF Best Use of Certified Timber Prize, rewarding architects and project teams for their use of certified timber as a main construction material for buildings outstanding in sustainability, innovation, quality or aesthetics.

“We sponsored the prize for the first time last year and were very pleased with the quality and diversity of the entries,” said Fabienne Sinclair, Head of Marketing at PEFC International. “We are excited to see what projects will be submitted this year.”

40 architects from 20 countries entered their projects into the prize in 2018. After a live presentation of the nine shortlisted projects, a jury of three experts, including architect Mark Thomson, chose International House in Sydney, designed by Tzannes and developed by Lend Lease, as the winner.

With its seven floors, International House is the world’s tallest all‐commercial building constructed fully from engineered timber. It catches the eye with its clear glass façade and, with its very low carbon outcome, sets new standards in sustainable construction. Recovery for Recycling of Old Corrugated Containers: Explaining the Exceptional Rate

After dipping from 92.8 percent in 2016 to 88.8 percent in 2017, the U.S. recovery for recycling rate for old corrugated containers (OCC) rebounded to 96.4 percent in 2018. Hearst UK pledges to swap plastic wraps for paper across all magazines by 2020 (pressgazette.co.uk)

Hearst UK, publisher of Cosmopolitan, Esquire and Good Housekeeping magazines, has pledged to replace plastic bags with paper wraps on all of its subscriber copies within six months. The change will apply across the magazine publisher’s 25 brands, which also include Harper’s Bazaar, Men’s Health, Elle and Red, on copies delivered to subscribers’ doorsteps. Hearst UK is the latest publisher to make the change, with the Guardian and Observer, FT, Times titles and Country Life magazine having all swapped out plastic wrappings for something more sustainable.

CDP is a non-profit organisation that works to transform the way the world does business, thus preventing damaging climate change. The CDP Climate A-list was produced at the request of 827 investors representing joint assets of US$100 trillion. A total of 193 companies, or 9% of all companies that submitted its climate disclosures were included on the list, which reflects global leadership in actions to mitigate climate change.
