Forest certification systems are essential to enable sustainable timber traceability

“What I’m most looking forward to at the PEFC Stakeholder Dialogue are practical and informed discussions on the crucial role of forests and certification to support net zero emissions by 2050,” says Dr Dorothy Maxwell, Sustainability Director at Davy Horizons and a moderator of tomorrow’s Stakeholder Dialogue.

In our interview, she gave us an insight into her job as Sustainability Director, the role of forests for tackling climate change, and what difference certification makes for businesses.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?
Hello – I’m Dr Dorothy Maxwell. I’m a sustainability professional with over 20 years international experience working with business and government on sustainability. My training is a MSc and PhD in Environmental Science from Imperial College London. I’m a Fellow and, board member of the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability.

Can you tell us more about the role of a Sustainability Director, and the main tasks and responsibilities it includes?
I am currently Sustainability Director with Davy Horizons – sustainability and ESG expert advisory unit in financial services firm Davy Group. We support businesses – PLC to private – understand what investors require across ESG and then support them integrate sustainability credibly in their business aligned to best practice and science.

Get to Know JDI’s Summer Students–Tree Planting Auditor

Sandra Mae Watling is a second year Forestry student at the University of New Brunswick's Fredericton campus. This summer she is one of the 110 students working in J.D. Irving, Limited’s (JDI) tree planting operations. Sandra Mae is a tree planting auditor, following behind the planting crew to ensure that all trees are planted to a quality standard. The nine auditors across the company are looking for quality indicators as they check their plots. Indicators include ensuring that seedlings are spaced appropriately, planted at the correct depth and that seedlings aren’t damaged or leaning.

UPS Appoints New Chief Sustainability Officer

UPS announced Suzanne Lindsay-Walker has been named UPS chief sustainability officer (CSO) and vice president of environmental affairs. In this role, she succeeds Tamara Barker, a 32-year UPS veteran who recently retired. Lindsay-Walker will be responsible for policies and programs to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations, as well as overseeing the attainment of UPS’s sustainability goals to reduce the use of carbon-based fuels. “The project engineering experience and sustainability knowledge Suzanne brings to the UPS team is impressive,” said Rhonda Clark, president, corporate plant engineering, UPS. “She has held important leadership roles at three other widely recognized brands – creating and leading their sustainability programs, designing commercial facilities and fostering customer and employee engagement. We are excited to have Suzanne at UPS helping us continue to make progress on UPS’s 2020 and 2025 sustainability goals.”
