AAP AUGUST 2021 STATSHOT REPORT: PUBLISHING INDUSTRY UP 9.8% FOR MONTH, AND 14.4% YEAR TO DATE

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) today released its StatShot report for August 2021 reflecting reported revenue for all tracked categories, including Trade (Consumer Books), K-12 Instructional Materials, Higher Education Course Materials, and Professional Publishing.

Total revenues across all categories for August 2021 were up 9.8% as compared to August 2020, coming in at $1.95 billion. Year to date revenues were up 14.4%, at $9.9 billion for the first eight months of the year.

Trade (Consumer Books) Revenues
Trade (Consumer Books) sales were up 17.6% in August, coming in at $822.8 million, and up 16.1% year to date, with $5.7 billion in revenue.

In terms of physical paper format revenues during the month of August, in the Trade (Consumer Books) category, Hardback revenues were up 14.3%, coming in at $297.8 million; Paperbacks were up 36.1%, with $295.1 million in revenue; Mass Market was up 21.5% to $17.7 million; and Board Books were up 41.0%, with $21.1 million in revenue.

eBook revenues were down 12.3% for the month as compared to August of 2020 for a total of $88.3 million. The Downloaded Audio format was up 9.6% for August, coming in at $64.3 million in revenue. Physical Audio was down 31.8% coming in at $1.5 million.

Sales in Juvenile Categories Continued to Rise in Early March

Unit sales of print books in the week ended Mar. 12, 2018, inched ahead 1% over the comparable week in 2017, at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. For the third consecutive week, the juvenile categories drove the sales gains. Unit sales in the juvenile nonfiction segment rose 8% over the week ended Mar. 11, 2017. Although children’s board books had a good week overall (unit sales were up 17%), two Chelsea Clinton titles helped lift sales in the category. She Persisted Around the World by Clinton and Alexandra Bolger sold more than 11,000 copies in its first week. The book is a follow-up to the pair’s She Persisted, which sold nearly 8,000 copies in the week, putting the titles in second and sixth place, respectively, on the category bestseller list. The release of the film A Wrinkle in Time pushed up two editions of the Madeleine L’Engle book into the first and sixth spots on the juvenile fiction bestseller list, helping raise unit sales in the segment 7%. The Enduring Popularity Of Print

Print continues to be the preferred media for magazine and book readers, challenging conventional industry thinking that digital is dominant. There’s little doubt that the global media and publishing industries are putting a lot of effort into pushing readers online. Whether it’s books, magazines, newspapers or advertising, the vast majority of investment is being made into the virtual rather than the physical, with companies focusing solely on digital at the expense of print. But it seems that readers are pushing back against the rising swell of digital content, continuing to show love for the traditional format and its many benefits. This love has been demonstrated in a number of recent studies, which show the enduring popularity of print magazines around the world and record-breaking figures for print book sales.
