Beyond the Box Solutions: Pratt Partners with Customers to Reduce Costs and Improve Efficiencies

At Pratt Industries, we take a holistic approach with our customers to look beyond basic packaging needs to develop vertically integrated, sustainable solutions to help protect, transport and drive sales for our customers’ products. To do this, we employ an extensive network of highly skilled experts who apply the knowledge they’ve gained from various industries to utilize best practices, reduce operational costs and improve efficiencies. Below are a few examples of how Pratt was able to assist our customers in creating beyond the box solutions for their organizations.

Partnering with our Value Improvement Program (VIP) team, a customer was able to reduce costs across its operations, including material, pallets, warehouse and freight. Pratt experts partnered with the customer to evaluate packaging, shipping and storage requirements for nearly 200 items. The Pratt team then performed tests to understand how changing containerboard grades, packaging dimensions and pallet configuration affected the items and overall supply chain costs. Based on these studies, Pratt recommended using less corrugated material more efficiently and optimizing the balance of case stacking on pallets. The result was more cases per pallet layer and a reduction in truckloads to create substantial savings in material, warehousing and freight.

Amcor has taken another step towards its goal to provide more sustainable packaging solutions by producing the first designed to be recycled plastic packaging for powdered chocolate in Latin America. Global packaging leader Smurfit Kappa has announced a multi-million euro investment in technology at its Nettingsdorf Paper Mill

The project consists of building a state-of-the-art recovery boiler by 2020 and a new steam turbine by 2022. This equipment will reinforce the industry-leading position that Smurfit Kappa Nettingsdorf currently holds, by virtue of having the lowest energy consumption in the paper industry. The new boiler will produce energy out of biomass, reducing CO₂ emissions at the Nettingsdorf mill by 40,000 tonnes, which represents a 1.5% reduction in Smurfit Kappa Group’s total CO₂ emissions. Smurfit Kappa recently announced in its 2016 Sustainability Development Report that it has already cut CO₂ emissions by 23%, well on the way to meeting its 2020 target of 25%. Huhtamaki has completed the acquisition of Ajanta Packaging

Huhtamaki has completed the acquisition of Ajanta Packaging's business in India. Ajanta Packaging is a manufacturer of pressure sensitive labels in India. The annual net sales of the acquired business are approximately EUR 10 million and it employs altogether 170 people. The debt free purchase price was approximately EUR 13 million. The business will be reported as part of the Flexible Packaging business segment as of June 1, 2018.
