Metsä Board was recognised for its actions to cut emissions, mitigate climate risks and develop a low-carbon economy. It is one of a small number of high-performing companies out of the thousands that were scored. In 2019, over 8,400 companies submitted information to be independently assessed against CDP’s supplier engagement rating methodology. “Metsä Board is a leader in sustainability and a position on the CDP Climate ‘A List’ is a welcome recognition to our continuous efforts. Last year we published our target to have 100% fossil free mills by 2030 and the ‘A List’ position confirms that we are working towards this ambitious goal,” says Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board.

As the debate about the carbon benefits of generating electricity in Europe from wood pellets manufactured in the southern United States continues, a new Forest2Market report shows that growth in demand for forest products (e.g., lumber, paper, packaging and wood pellets) has led to greater forest productivity and a significant increase in the amount of forest inventory available for storing carbon. The report, Historical Perspective on the Relationship between Demand and Forest Productivity in the US South, analyzes US Forest Service data and other scientific research to understand the relationship between changes in demand and supply from 1953 to 2015. Heinzel Group’s operations are characterized by saving resources, environmental protection, energy efficiency and use of renewable sources of energy. Besides the own power generation for pulp and paper production and the green energy obtained from hydropower, the roofs of Laakirchen Papier AG and Zellstoff Pöls AG are now used for the generation of renewable energy through photovoltaic systems. In cooperation with Heinzel Energy, over 9,000 solar modules are installed on around 15,000 m² of roof area which generate more than 3 GWh of green energy per year. Up to 800 tons of CO2 can be saved with both photovoltaic systems and the electricity produced will supply more than 850 households.
