BOPE and Low Sit Sealant Films Featured in Inteplast’s New Mono-material Flex Packaging Portfolio

Inteplast Group’s BOPP Films and Engineered Films (IEF) have developed a film portfolio of recyclable, mono-material flexible packaging featuring cutting edge biaxially oriented polyethylene (BOPE) films and low seal initiation temperature (SIT) sealant webs. The portfolio will be exhibited at this September’s Pack Expo in Las Vegas.

When used in tandem, these BOPE films and low-SIT sealant webs support the industry-wide shift toward flexible packaging that is recycle-ready and circular economy friendly. Potential applications include stand-up pouches, fresh-cut produce packaging, cold-seal packaging, and vertical and horizontal form, fill and seal.

Historically, traditional multi-material flexible packaging has been non-recyclable due to the complications with material separation. The use of mono-material PE flexible packaging improves recycling rates, reduces waste, and promotes the sustainable use of resources.

Georgia-Pacific announced the expansion of its Hummingbird® digital print solutions with the purchase of an HP PageWide T1190 Press, the world’s highest-volume digital corrugated packaging solution. The HP T1190 will be GP’s third inkjet web press installed since 2015 when it launched digital print services with the HP T400S press and subsequently deployed a T1100 110-inch press. GP’s Hummingbird provides a range of digitally printed corrugated packaging solutions for consumer-packaged goods, electronics, and food and beverage brands across North America. Digital print allows for regional or product variations without minimum quantities, variable print, and faster turn on print since print plates are not needed. Digital allows a customer to print only what they need, when they need it – which reduces waste. The press also uses water-based inks, which HP notes does not contain hazardous air pollutants and is also odorless. Hummingbird’s digital offerings include corrugated shelf-ready packaging (SRP), food trays, large-format boxes, e-commerce solutions, and volume displays (POP).

Aptar Surpasses Emissions Reduction Goals and Issues Updated Science-Based Targets in Line with 1.5°C Climate Ambition

AptarGroup, Inc. announced that it has updated its Scope 1 and 2 science-based targets, setting an emissions reduction goal consistent with requirements to limit global temperature rise to 1.5° Celsius by year 2030. In 2021, Aptar significantly surpassed the original goals for emissions reduction to the WB2°C scenario and as a result, the Company has worked to update these goals to be more ambitious. Today, Aptar is proud to announce that its Scope 1 and 2 absolute emissions reduction targets align to the 1.5°C scenario and have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Metsä Group starts pre-engineering project for Muoto™ wood fibre packaging products

After promising results from the ongoing demonstration phase, Metsä Group has decided to conduct, in parallel with the demo phase, a pre-engineering project related to a possible first commercial-scale factory. Muoto™ packages are renewable and recyclable bioproducts that can be utilised in, e.g., takeaway, berry, tray, and combo packaging. Metsä Group’s innovation company Metsä Spring has decided to start a pre-engineering project for the first commercial factory producing the new packaging solution, Muoto™. Muoto products are wood-based alternatives to plastic packaging. Pre-engineering is a key planning phase, after which Metsä Group will have the conditions of factory planning in place to consider deciding on the factory investment, and it is expected to be completed in early 2025. Based on the outcome of pre-engineering and the continued work in the demo phase, mainly using a unique demo plant in Äänekoski, Finland, Metsä Group will assess the possibility of starting this new business and investing in a factory to support that business. Metsä Group has already decided that the possible factory would be located at its Rauma site in Finland.
