Domtar Sustainability Priorities Include Emissions, Water, Forestry

For more than 20 years, Domtar has put sustainability at the heart of everything we do. Our newest sustainability report details our sustainability priorities for the years ahead. We have developed these sustainability priorities through the leadership of our cross-company Environmental, Social and Governance Committee and with input from a wide variety of stakeholders.

“We’ve identified six broad priority areas,” says Paige Goff, vice president for sustainability. “This approach will shape our strategy and specific goals moving forward. They include how we monitor and manage the effects of operations for our employees, customers, suppliers, communities and consumers.”

Our sustainability priorities also align with our efforts to responsibly use natural resources and reduce the long-term effects of our operations on the natural environment.

We will focus our work on the following key areas:

Verified Fiber Sourcing
verified fiber sourcing sustainability prioritiesWe will leverage technology to bring enhanced transparency to the sourcing and movement of fiber through our supply chain, and by doing110 so, make tomorrow’s fiber certification schemes more cost-effective and predictable. We plan to begin this process while continuing to increase the use of certified fiber by working with landowners and staying at the forefront of forest management best practices.

Net Zero Emissions by 2050
net zero sustainability prioritiesWe are working to develop a credible pathway to become a net zero emitter of greenhouse gases by 2050. This effort complements our positive advocacy with governments regarding future climate-related legislation and regulations.

Water Stewardship Goal by 2030
water stewardship sustainability prioritiesNow that we have developed a full-cost-of-water model, the next step is to apply that model at all our pulp and paper manufacturing operations as part of our water stewardship roadmap towards 2030. We will bring the same rigor and discipline that we use to efficiently manage fuel, chemicals and fiber to our stewardship of water, given the interconnectedness of these vital resources.

Employee Safety
employee safety sustainability prioritiesWe will maintain our best-in-class safety culture that incorporates industry-leading methods and tools to foster the safe workplace our employees, contractors and visitors deserve. We will continue to execute awareness and prevention programs to eliminate the potential for life-altering hazards, minimize injury and identify safety risks before they occur. In addition, we will sharpen our focus to reduce the severity of incidents, beyond the scope of numbers of incidents.

Community Engagement

We will continue to encourage our employees to volunteer in activities that enhance the well-being of our communities, both in everyday life and in times of extraordinary need.

Survey: Sustainability takes back seat to price with holiday shoppers

A new survey that finds consumers value-minded this holiday season also ranks the brands they perceive as most sustainable. Bombas was rated the top sustainable brand, followed by Yeti and The North Face, according to Stifel’s “Sustainable Lifestyle Brands Index,” which ranks brands based on U.S. active/casual lifestyle consumer perception of brand sustainability practices. The brands were measured according to three metrics of sustainability: environmental, social and ethical business practices. The Index was released in conjunction with a survey in which Stifel, working with Morning Consult, surveyed 6,053 U.S. active/causal lifestyle brand consumers ages 18-55. The survey data indicates heightened price sensitivity, just as the holiday shopping season kicks into high gear.

Glatfelter Enters Into Consent Decree to Resolve Fox River Environmental Liability

Glatfelter announced that it has entered into a consent decree with the United States Government, the State of Wisconsin, and Georgia-Pacific Consumer Products, under which Glatfelter expects to fully resolve its liability for the Lower Fox River and Green Bay environmental remediation and related Superfund litigation. The consent decree is subject to approval by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. The Lower Fox River and Green Bay site involves the remediation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from the bed of the river, and has been the source of complex, multi-party litigation since 2008. Under the terms of the settlement, Glatfelter agrees to pay to the United States $20.5 million to resolve all claims for past government cleanup, enforcement, and oversight costs and natural resources damages. Glatfelter will also be responsible for payment of future oversight costs. In addition, Glatfelter will be primarily responsible to perform the long-term monitoring and maintenance work in certain portions of the site, with Georgia-Pacific performing that work in other portions of the site.
