The Blue Angel is an environmental label organised by the federal government of Germany for the protection of people and the environment. It sets very exacting standards, is independent and has proven itself over more than 35 years as a guide for selecting environmentally-friendly products. The Blue Angel for Printed Matters (RAL-UZ 195) is awarded to printed matter that represents an environmentally friendly alternative to standard printed matter available on the market.

Printing Inks
In partnership with WKS Group, our new PremEco BE Series has been developed especially with the environment in mind. WKS Group are a leading German Heatset printer and pioneer for sustainable production technologies. Benefitting from a wide range of press sizes including the world’s only 160pp press, they have become the first Heatset printer using Heatset ink from Flint Group to receive the new Blue Angel certification for printed matters (RAL-UZ 195).

As Flint Group also has a leading role in the development of environmental standards for the printing industry, WKS Group and Flint Group have established a development partnership for the further advancement of Heatset ink. In the course of this cooperation, Flint Group has developed the PremEco BE Series and undertaken extensive tests for all paper grades (LWC, SC, Newsprint). The outcome of this successful development partnership is that Flint Group now supplies WKS Group exclusively with PremEco BE.

Press Room Chemicals
To be compliant with RAL-UZ 195, a number of environmental criteria must be adhered to for the press room chemicals used in the printing process. For example, Fountain solution additives should contain VOC levels less than 10 %; although higher values are acceptable providing that a valid justification is given. The ready-made fountain solution must contain less than 3% IPA in formulation.

For Roller and Blanket Washes there are restrictions on aromatic hydrocarbons (<1%) and chlorinated solvents. The flashpoint has to be greater than 55°C but ideally should be above 100°C.

Target to Expand Solar Deployments to 180 Stores and DCs

Target Corp. is expanding its deployment of solar energy. The retailer has signed a power-purchase agreement with Greenskies Renewable Energy LLC that calls for supplier to install solar arrays on the roofs of 180 Target stores and distribution centers across the United States from Augusta, Maine, to San Diego. When completed, the solar installations will produce an aggregate total of approximately 100 megawatts of electric energy. Though the size of the solar array will vary at each of the retail locations, the average system will consist of 1,700 solar panels. All 180 projects are expected to be completed by the winter of 2016. Under its power-purchase agreement with Target, Greenskies will design, develop, finance, own and maintain each of the 180 solar installations. Target has agreed to purchase 100% of the electricity produced at each of the sites at a fixed and sharply discounted rate for the length of the contract. Each roof-top array will produce between 20% and 30% of the total electricity requirements of the retail outlet on which it is built, Chester said.

Sustainable Forests in Canada and the United States

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) committed in its latest annual progress report to continue advancing sustainability through forest-focused collaborations by maximizing its efforts in standards, conservation, education, and community. SFI’s 2019 report, entitled “Forests of Opportunity”, recounts the organization’s accomplishments encouraging and certifying the latest best practices in sustainable forest management with all its partners in Canada and the U.S. The report reflects the organization’s belief in the wealth of possibilities for economic growth, job‑creation and community building available by taking advantage of the values, goods and services provided by sustainably managed forests and sustainably sourced forest products. “Forests provide an opportunity to maintain and recover biodiversity and sustain a variety of conservation values, including clean water,” Kathy Abusow, President and CEO of SFI said in the foreword to the 2019 report. “But to seize these opportunities, forests must be sustainably managed and forest products must be responsibly sourced.”
