International Day of Forests: but we can’t stop here!

“As the first International Day of Forests since the COP21 agreement and the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is great to see forests being put into the spotlight,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International.

“As a grassroots organization working in the forest and with forest-dependent communities, we directly contribute to most, if not all, of the 17 SDGs. From improving life on land, to poverty alleviation, food security, good health and education, sustainable forestry has a vital role to play as we look to meet these challenging targets.”

Ben was speaking at the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) organized International Day of Forests dinner in Australia earlier this week, sharing the speakers’ platform with Senator Anne Ruston, Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources.

“Today we celebrate the International Day of Forests,” Ben continued. “However, for us at PEFC, every day is the ‘Day of Forests’, as we work continually towards our vision of a world in which people manage forests sustainably.”

The AFS dinner was an opportunity for the sector to enjoy a casual evening with PEFC/AFS members and a wide section of representatives, including supply chain, forest scientists, forest growers, forest managers, CEOs, and sector leaders from all states and environmental groups.

“Ben’s visit speaks volumes for the importance of the PEFC-endorsed AFS standard and the trust placed in certified forests, both in Australia and New Zealand,” said Kate Carnell AO, chair of AFS Ltd.

In the days leading up to the International Day of Forests, Ben, accompanied by AFS CEO Simon Dorries, met with several different organizations and companies around Australia, including Carter Holt Harvey, Borg Manufacturing, the Green Building Council and business standards company BSI.

DS Smith Recycling and Co-op Sign New 5-Year Contract

DS Smith Recycling, one of Europe’s largest paper and card recyclers, managing more than 5.5 million tonnes for recycling annually, signs new five-year contract with Co-op, the UK’s sixth biggest food retailer. he Co-op is one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives, with more than 2,500 stores across the UK alone, committed to improving sustainability, and finding new ways to become more efficient. The partnership between The Co-op and DS Smith will see 56,000 tonnes of fibre processed in the UK annually at Kemsley Paper Mill, the second largest recovered fibre-based paper facility in Europe.

Spreading the word around the globe – our online communications campaigns

Forest certification is one of the few tools that can directly connect the consumer to the forest. It enables each of us to make a difference to the world’s forests through buying certified products. We are reaching out to consumers to show that forest certification is about so much more than only trees – and online campaigns are an increasingly important aspect of this work. In the past year, we have been reaching out to, interacting with, and hearing from people around the world through a number of online communication campaigns. The campaign to our 20th anniversary kicked off last July. After a soft launch at the beginning of 2019, the “year of celebration” began the day after PEFC’s anniversary on 30 June. It was on this day back in 1999 when European small-forest owners came together to create PEFC – an international forest certification system that had their needs at heart.
