Klabin advances in the sustainable management of forest areas in Santa Catarina

Present in Santa Catarina for over 50 years, Klabin remains committed to promoting environmentally responsible actions that contribute to the sustainable development of the region. The results of the Company’s effort can be seen in the 2023 Public Summary of Klabin’s Forest Management Plan in the state, now available to society at the link .

The document brings important evolutionary data on the forestry management adopted by the company, as well as on the environmental education actions implemented by the company. According to the material, Klabin’s forestry base reached 141 thousand hectares, distributed in 44 municipalities in Santa Catarina, in the West, Middle West, Serra Catarinense, North and Alto Vale regions, in addition to the Northeast, Center Northeast and East of Rio Great South. The Company also has forests in Paraná and São Paulo, with information available in separate documents.

Julio Nogueira, Klabin’s Sustainability and Environment manager, explains that the company is a world pioneer in the adoption of mosaic forest management, with pine and eucalyptus plantations interspersed with native forest areas, thus preserving local biodiversity. “In the forestry scope of Santa Catarina, the Company’s native areas represent 49% of the forestry base, a relevant volume that reflects our engagement with an environmentally responsible performance. In addition, planted and native forests make a strong contribution to preserving the environment, both in terms of protecting biodiversity and maintaining water sources,” he says.

Slovakian and Norwegian National Systems Achieve PEFC Re-endorsement

Slovakia and Norway have become the latest countries to successfully achieve PEFC re-endorsement of their national forest certification systems, verifying their continued compliance with PEFC’s globally recognized Sustainability Benchmarks. With this re-endorsement, the countries’ certified forest owners and companies can continue benefitting from the global acceptance of PEFC. Norway, one of the 11 original national members of PEFC, was among the first to achieve PEFC endorsement of their forest certification system back in 2000. This was followed by two more successful endorsements in 2006 and 2010. Since then, more than 9.1 million hectares of forest have become PEFC certified, equaling more than three quarters of the country’s forest area. In Slovakia, almost two-thirds of the country’s forest area, more than 1.2 million hectares, has become PEFC certified in the ten years since the system was first endorsed by PEFC. This is the second successful re-endorsement of the Slovakian certification system, with the country achieving their first re-endorsement back in 2010.
