For the third time in a row Klabin has been included in the Environmental Paper Company Index 2017 (EPCI), published every two years by WWF. EPCI is based on voluntary disclosure by companies of more than 50 indicators that measure the environmental performance and changes in them over time with regard to Responsible Fiber Supply, Clean Production and Environmental Management System reports.
Klabin achieved a high level of performance by reaching a score of 100% on Responsible Fiber Supply, and a 6% increase in the Clean Production indicator compared to the previous measurement, while maintaining its score above 50% in Environmental Management reports. All the indicators considered the operations of the company’s 18 current production units (17 in Brazil and one in Argentina), compared to 14 units the company had in the previous edition. The company’s results and inclusion in the Index underscore sustainability as the foundation of Klabin’s business management, being the link in the continuous creation of value, which prioritizes a balance between the economical, social and environmental spheres.
One of the issues in the Brazilian scenario that WWF’s Index highlights is the certified and correctly managed planted forests as the main factor in reducing the pressure on natural forests, which enables forest restoration initiatives. In this context, Klabin has been consolidating its position by having its forest stewardship practices as a global productivity benchmark. It was the first company in the Southern Hemisphere to receive an international certification attesting to its responsible and economically feasible forest management practices that foster healthy relations with local communities and was the pioneered the forestry certification for small rural farmer partners.
Also according to the EPCI results, South America became the leader this year, reporting the environmental performance of over 50% of the total volume of pulp and paper produced in the region. Altogether, 93 companies from all over the world participated, of which six are from South America and three are Brazilians. In this edition, participants from Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America disclosed their environmental performance in the pulp, packaging paper, printing paper, newsprint and sanitary (hygiene, personal and professional use) paper.
