Billerud presents a machine glazed kraft paper especially adapted and validated for wrapping toilet and kitchen paper rolls. Hitting the sustainability sweet spot – renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, but also enduring tough handling as good as any PE plastic. Toilet and kitchen paper rolls are consumed in enormous numbers every day. For brand owners, switching from plastic to this paper wrapping would mean a significant sustainability gain. But also, for meeting consumer preferences. An Ipsos Global survey of 20 000 consumers (2021) shows that three out of four consumers want to get rid of single-use plastics. So, this new alternative from Billerud is a strong tool to decrease the gap between brands and consumers. Sustainability and a low carbon footprint are obvious strengths, but the new wrapping has more up its sleeve. Billerud’s white, long, soft virgin fibers enable excellent printability. The packaging will certainly stand out on the shelf.

The two companies will partner to provide circular solutions to the market. The investment in a complete recycling solution is set to significantly improve recycling throughout Central and Eastern Europe. The partnership, that follows a comprehensive feasibility study, sees the introduction of a large-scale carton repulping line at Stora Enso’s Ostrołęka production unit in Poland. The line will triple the annual recycling capacity of used beverage cartons in Poland from 25 000 to 75 000 tonnes. This will allow recycling of the entire volume of beverage cartons sold in the country and the ones coming from neighbouring countries, including Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The total investment is EUR 29.1 million. Stora Enso will invest EUR 17 million into a new repulping line that will recover the carton fibers. Tetra Pak along with Plastigram will invest a total of EUR 12.1 million to build an additional line. It will recover and separately recycle the polymers and the aluminium, using a patented separation technology. Both lines will be operational in the beginning of 2023.

When we think about corrugated packaging, boxes used for shipping goods are probably what comes to mind for most adults. However, when given to children, those same boxes bring to life a world of wonder and creativity. What child doesn’t gravitate to empty boxes for play? From castles and robots to forts and rocket ships, corrugated boxes inspire a child’s imagination and help them understand how the world around them works. We asked employees to share some creative ways they and their children have used corrugated boxes. While moving homes, six-year-old twins put extra corrugated packaging to good use building a private fort and backdrop for their toys. “I was worried the boys would have nothing to do while we packed up the last of our house,” said Mary Beth Sharp, Vice President of Marketing. “But they came home from school and were super excited when they saw the extra boxes. They each made their own space and were content long enough for us to finish loading the moving truck.”
