PEFC Annual Review 2016–Highlighting the Achievements of the PEFC Alliance

So much happened at PEFC in 2016, it is hard to know where to start!

PEFC was delighted to welcome new national members from Ghana, Hungary, Macedonia, Republic of Korea, Romania and Thailand. You have to look back to the early days of our organization for so many members joining in one year. These new members join a fantastic network of organizations, and many of their activities can be found throughout the Annual Review.

Our international projects go from strength to strength. We collaborate with partners and donors around the world to support the development of national forest certification systems, innovate new ways to get more trees certified and work with smallholders. There are now at least a dozen countries developing national systems and preparing for PEFC membership.

We also launched the revision process of our Sustainability Benchmarks – the standards that form the basis for nearly all our activities. As the world changes, best practices and knowledge evolve and society’s expectations grow, we must make sure our standards are the best they can be. The process that will take more than two years, affect the majority of our standards, and involve hundreds of experts and thousands of stakeholders.

Last but not least, 2016 was the year we reached 300 million hectares of PEFC-certified forest!

PEFC stakeholders join forces in implementing group certification in Thailand

PEFC and the Thailand Forestry Certification Council (TFCC), our national member for Thailand, have launched a group certification project to support smallholders producing rubber in Thailand. Presented in the Trang province in Thailand in March, the project supports the Klongprang Cooperative in implementing group certification for 1000 hectares of forest, managed by small-scale rubber growers. A wide range of stakeholders from the industry is participating in this effort, providing not only technical and financial support but also market information and demand for the certified products. CDP, an environmental impact non-profit, has named The Home Depot to its Climate Change "A" List for its actions to cut carbon emissions and mitigate climate risks. Every year, thousands of companies disclose data about their environmental impacts to CDP for independent assessment and receive scores of A to D- for how effectively they are tackling climate change. Sealed Air Earns Recognition Among Top Three Percent for Global Leadership in Addressing Climate-Related Issues

Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE: SEE) has been awarded a position on the prestigious Supplier Engagement Leaderboard by the CDP for its actions and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate-related issues and risks in its supply chain. Sealed Air, a leading manufacturer of protective packaging, has a history of limiting resource use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The CDP provides third-party validation of these efforts and the scores serve as a benchmark for companies to compare environmental efforts against peers. For its 2019 disclosure, Sealed Air received an A- for its overall Climate Change score, marking the sixth year in a row the company has been recognized by CDP.
