Postal Service Begins FY23 Fourth Quarter with Steady Delivery Performance

The United States Postal Service reported new delivery performance metrics for the first week of the fourth quarter for fiscal year 2023 showing steady delivery performance across all mail categories. The average time for the Postal Service to deliver a mailpiece or package across the nation during the holiday week was 2.6 days.

FY23 fourth quarter service performance scores covering July 1 through July 7, included:
*First-Class Mail: 92.5 percent of First-Class Mail delivered on time against the USPS service standard, consistent with performance from the fiscal third quarter.
*Marketing Mail: 95.6 percent of Marketing Mail delivered on time against the USPS service standard, consistent with performance from the fiscal third quarter.
*Periodicals: 87.9 percent of Periodicals delivered on time against the USPS service standard, consistent with performance from fiscal third quarter.

Hearst and Rodale Inc. announced that Hearst has agreed to acquire the magazine and book businesses of Rodale, a global health and wellness content company based in New York and Emmaus, Pennsylvania. First Half Sales Slipped 1.4% at PRH (publishersweekly.com)

Increases in sales of e-books and digital audiobooks and higher online sales helped to cushion the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic at Penguin Random House, parent company Bertelsmann reported this morning. Total revenue in the first half of 2020 fell 1.4% at PRH from the comparable period a year ago, dropping to €1.63 billion. EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) fell 7.9%, to €209 million. In April, Bertelsmann also acquired the remaining 25% stake in PRH that had been held by Pearson. The U.S. had the best performance among PRH’s international companies, with sales rising 5.2%, to €990 million. “The coronavirus pandemic had a negative impact on the company’s businesses due to the extensive closures of local bookstores,” Bertelsmann reported. “In contrast, the US business demonstrated particular resilience, partially offsetting reductions in other countries.”

URBN Reports Record Holiday Sales

Urban Outfitters, Inc. announced net sales for the two and eleven months ended December 31, 2023. Total Company net sales for the two months ended December 31, 2023, increased 10% compared to the two months ended December 31, 2022. Total Retail segment net sales increased 8%, with comparable Retail segment net sales increasing 6%. Comparable Retail segment net sales increased 20% at Free People and 14% at Anthropologie and decreased 13% at Urban Outfitters. Wholesale segment net sales increased 15% driven by an increase in Free People wholesale sales primarily due to increases in sales to department stores and specialty accounts, partially offset by a decrease in Urban Outfitters wholesale sales. Nuuly segment net sales increased 71% primarily driven by a 58% increase in our subscribers versus the end of the prior year's comparable period.
