Simon & Schuster Establishes New Distribution Facility in Jackson, Tennessee

As part of its fast-growing distribution client business, Simon & Schuster has opened a new distribution facility in Jackson, Tennessee. Simon & Schuster is already operating in 400,000 square feet of the facility, in what will eventually be a one million square foot distribution center by the end of the year.

New distribution client Callisto Media, the prolific global publisher of best-selling titles focused on lifestyle, cooking, and children’s books, is set to be one of the first publishers shipped from the Jackson warehouse. The distribution agreement with Callisto Media is effective March 1, 2023.

The company will continue to ship from its Riverside and Milan Distribution Centers.

“The rapid growth of our client business in the last few years has exceeded our own initial expectations when we expanded our distribution capacity in Milan, Tennessee in 2019. With Tennessee as an ideal, geographically central location for shipping nationwide, we’re excited to open this new facility with greater capacity that matches our ambitions for growth in the distribution business,” said Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operations Officer Dennis Eulau.

The four large publicly traded consumer publishers that recently reported their financial results for the quarter ended March 31 were all able to point to some good financial news. HarperCollins had the best results, with sales up 6.4% compared to the same quarter last year and profits rising 16.2%. In a conference call discussing results, Susan Panuccio, CFO of HC parent company News Corp, said the sales gains were led by the general and Christian publishing divisions. Backlist titles did particularly well, accounting for 58% of revenue in the quarter, compared to 52% a year ago, Panuccio said. She added that the strong performance of the backlist helped to boost margins. Another important contributor was downloadable audiobooks. The format had strong gains in the quarter, helping to offset softness in e-book sales and leading to a 5% increase in overall digital sales at HC compared to the prior year. USPS Economic Analysis Used to Support Rate Hikes

Keep US Posted — a nonprofit advocacy group of consumers, nonprofits, newspapers, greeting card publishers, magazines, catalogs and small businesses — is calling attention to new analysis, which shows that U.S. Postal Service’s practice of raising mailing rates every six months is based on flawed economic forecasting that greatly underestimates the rate hikes’ impact on lost mail volume. The report, which was commissioned by the Greeting Card Association and the Association for Postal Commerce (PostCom), has been published just weeks before USPS is expected to ask the Postal Regulatory Commission to approve the sixth stamp hike in just two years, likely occurring in July. According to the report, USPS is basing stamp hikes on a demand model which underestimates the elasticities (or price sensitivity) of its consumers —relying too heavily on historical data, among other issues.

Book Publisher Revenue Up For Adult Books, University Presses in 2017

Publishers’ revenue for trade (consumer) books increased by $96 million (+1.3%) to $7.6 billion in 2017. The growth in trade books is attributed to a +3.0% revenue uptick in the Adult Books category, which comprises more than 65% of all revenue for trade books. Revenue for Childrens/YA books and Religious Presses declined in 2017. Overall publisher revenue for 2017 was flat at $14.7 billion, up $57.5 million (+0.4%) from 2016. These numbers include sales for all tracked categories (Trade - fiction/non-fiction/religious, PreK-12 Instructional Materials, Higher Education Course Materials, Professional Publishing, and University Presses).
