Smurfit Kappa to invest $100 million to drive down emissions in Colombia

Smurfit Kappa, world leader in paper-based packaging, is investing almost USD100 million in a sustainable biomass boiler which will reduce its global Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions by approximately 6%.

The ambitious project is the latest example of the circularity that permeates every aspect of the company’s operations. Smurfit Kappa has successfully implemented biomass boilers at several other locations including the Nervion, Piteå and Sangüesa paper mills in Europe.

The boiler, which will be constructed at its paper mill in Yumbo, Colombia, will replace the fossil fuels currently used with different types of organic waste to generate cleaner energy. The organic waste will be comprised of pine and eucalyptus bark from the company’s own forestry plantations, waste from its wood treatment plant, and ashes and sludge generated during the paper-manufacturing process.

When the new boiler is operational, the mill will significantly reduce the site’s fossil fuel usage and deliver significant cost savings.

Mondi has announced the approval of a €400 million investment in a new paper machine at its flagship Štětí mill in the Czech Republic. It will also allow Mondi to optimise production across the remaining kraft paper portfolio and strengthen its leading position in speciality kraft paper across a broad range of applications such as functional barrier papers.

Sonoco Implementing Price Increases for Paperboard Tubes and Cores

Sonoco announced it will increase prices for its paper-based tubes and cores by a minimum of 6 percent in the United States and Canada, effective with shipments beginning July 16, 2018. “The price increase is necessary due to ongoing increases in uncoated recycled paperboard (URB), the largest input cost for tubes and cores. URB demand remains strong and the marketplace is extremely tight, with operating rates pushing 100 percent,” said Doug Schwartz, division vice president of sales and marketing. “In addition, the rising cost of transportation remains a headwind due to lack of capacity linked to recently imposed driver regulations. As a result, Sonoco will be implementing a new policy of selling certain large diameter tubes that have less space utilization yields at F.O.B. from our operations.”

SCA to increase kraftliner prices by €50 per tonne

SCA increases the prices on white and brown kraftliner in Europe by €50 per tonne. The new price is valid from December 1, 2021. “The kraftliner market remains strong”, comments Mikael Frölander, VP Sales and Marketing Containerboard. “We have a firm confidence in transport packaging, while we see a limited product supply.”
