Sonoco Implementing Price Increase for Uncoated Recycled Paperboard

Sonoco (NYSE: SON) today announced it is implementing a $50 per ton price increase for all grades of uncoated recycled paperboard (URB) in the United States and Canada, effective with shipments beginning May 30, 2022.

Sonoco said the price change reflects continued tight market conditions and inflationary pressures on manufacturing costs, including energy, freight, chemicals, packaging materials and labor. “Unfortunately, the conditions that challenged us in 2021 have not dissipated in 2022. We continue to be challenged by strong demand, increasing backlogs and inflating costs,” said Tim Davis, Division Vice President and General Manager, Paper – U.S. and Canada.

American Forest & Paper Association Releases March 2021 Containerboard Monthly Report

Total Containerboard production in March increased nine percent compared to March 2020. It was up two percent when compared to the same three months of 2020. March 2021 production of containerboard for export decreased 15 percent compared to the same month last year; it was down 25 percent year-to-date. The containerboard operating rate was 98.4 percent, up 2.8 points from March 2020 and essentially flat (-0.3 pts.) year-to-date. Mill inventories of containerboard at the end of March decreased 77,000 short tons from the previous month and were down 56,000 short tons compared to March 2020.

SEE Divests Reflectix® Business

SEE announced it has completed the sale of its Reflectix® business to an affiliate of Balcan Innovations. Under SEE’s ownership, Reflectix grew to become the largest brand of reflective insulation solutions serving construction, HVAC, and insulation applications for residential do-it-yourself and pro-channels. Reflectix’s products are widely distributed in North America through more than 3,500 dealer, distributor and retail locations. The transaction includes Reflectix manufacturing facilities in Markleville, Indiana, where they employ approximately 80 employees.
