Stora Enso commits to net-zero carbon emissions

Committing to net-zero emissions by signing The Climate Pledge is a logical step for Stora Enso in its long-term ambition to become net carbon positive, and to offer 100% regenerative products and solutions by 2050. Stora Enso remains committed to deliver on its existing 2030 target to reduce absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 50% from the 2019 baseline. This target is aligned with the 1.5-degree scenario and is approved by the Science Based Targets initiative.

Stora Enso will continue its decarbonisation journey to improve energy efficiency and to switch from fossil-based energy sources to renewable ones. Stora Enso will further improve its Scope 3 performance by enhancing efficiency and lowering carbon intensity in the value chain, collaborating with its raw material suppliers, logistics suppliers, and customers.

Signatories of The Climate Pledge agree to:
– Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis.
– Implement decarbonisation strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies.
– Neutralise any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially beneficial offsets to achieve net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040.

Why Circularity Is Key for Sustainability Practices

According to McKinsey, the pandemic accelerated the shift to e-commerce by as much as ten years, completely altering consumer and industry trends in a matter of months. While a lot of businesses benefited from reaching new and larger audiences online, supply chains were left to figure out how to adapt based on increased consumer demand for packaging. Meanwhile, consumers have been increasingly paying closer attention to the sustainability practices of companies and brands. More than half of U.S. consumers are highly concerned about the environmental impact of packaging. Companies, then, are challenged to find cost-effective and sustainable packaging at speed and scale. But embracing sustainability in the supply chain isn’t as simple as switching out your current packaging for a perceived “eco-friendly” alternative. Timber is key to unlocking a green and sustainable future

“Public perception of timber is unbalanced. People need to be educated about the role that forestry can play in our battle against climate change,” highlighted Conor Fahy. Conor is one of the speakers in our 2022 PEFC Stakeholder Dialogue, on 12 May in Dublin. Ahead of the Big Day, we spoke to him and other speakers, to learn more about their work, their visions, and the role of certified timber for a more sustainable world. Conor Fahy is General Manager of ECC Timber Products, Ireland’s largest exporter of sawn and planed timber products. He started working in the company as a Quality Manager after graduating from NUI Galway with a BEng (Hons) in Energy Systems Engineering. He assisted ECC to become the first Irish Sawmill to obtain PEFC chain of custody certification and has continued to oversee the company’s regular review and upkeep of the PEFC standards.
