The EUDR is a reality

The landmark EU anti-deforestation Regulation (EUDR) enters into force. The EUDR provisions will become applicable as of 30 December 2024.

FSC has supported the development of the EUDR since the beginning, and is now ready to work together with the EU Commission, EU Competent Authorities, NGOs, and businesses to make it a success.

What is the EUDR?
The EUDR prohibits placing or exporting products in/from the EU market that do not comply with its legality and sustainability requirements. Companies must conduct due diligence to ensure that the products they source are legal and are not linked to land that has been deforested or degraded after 31 December 2020. The EUDR’s main goal is to reduce the EU’s impact on global deforestation by promoting the consumption of ‘deforestation-free’ products.

How can FSC support?
FSC brings nearly 30 years of experience in employing a market-based approach to tackle deforestation and degradation. With its sustainability requirements covering both environmental and social aspects, FSC certification already provides a strong foundation for businesses to build on to meet their EUDR duties.

Robust certification schemes such as FSC cannot be used to exempt companies from their due diligence obligations; at the same time, FSC can be key in supporting them to assess and mitigate risks in their due diligence duties in a systematic and cost-effective way.

Paper bags favoured by Morrisons as they consider removing plastic bags from all stores

This week, the supermarket chain Morrisons has launched a “paper bag only” trail in eight stores. If successful, the chain will consider removing plastic bags from all stores and will offer paper bags only. Morrisons started to give their customers the choice between paper and plastic bags earlier this year when they introduced reusable paper bags into their stores at a 20p charge (the same price as a plastic “bag for life”). However, since they have seen little evidence to suggest that the plastic bags are being re-used and therefore, continue to have a negative impact on the environment, they are considering ditching them altogether. Andy Atkinson, Group Customer and Marketing Director, at Morrisons said: “We are taking another meaningful step that will remove an estimated 1,300 tonnes of plastic out of the environment each year. Our customers have told us that reducing plastic is their number one environmental concern so introducing the paper bag across the nation will provide another way of reducing the plastic in their lives.”

Wisconsin’s century-old model of forestry comes under pressure

*As the nation's leading papermaking state, Wisconsin feels the disruption caused by digital media acutely. The state's ink-on-paper economy has been shrinking for over a decade — pulpwood is the largest volume consumer of Wisconsin-grown timber — while the 2008 housing meltdown was so severe that sawmills and lumber works have yet to fully recover. *Family-owned woodland, which accounts for more than half of the state's forests, is being inherited by a generation that is less inclined to maintain the land as "working" forests — those that feed paper mills and saw mills — and more inclined to sell it off piecemeal. *Wall Street investors have been buying up forestland in Wisconsin and other states, then parceling it and flipping it. Some of the land becomes subdivisions and golf courses, and some is held by investment funds that sell it in far less time than it takes a tree to reach harvesting maturity. *The globalization of the economy since the 1990s has increased competition from warmer climates such as South America and southern Asia, which can grow pulpwood more efficiently than Wisconsin, where brutal winters annually interrupt growth cycles.
