Vietnam gains new FSC Interim Forest Stewardship Standard for Non-Timber Forest Products

The FSC Interim Forest Stewardship Standard (IFSS) for Non- Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) for Vietnam has been published. Organizations can now certify their NTFPs, supporting the promotion of responsible forestry around the world by ensuring social responsibility, environmental protection, and economic sustainability.

In Vietnam, NTFPs including bamboo, rattan, bamboo shoots, edible plant, fruit, and herbal plants carry good potential for organizations and communities to generate additional income from forest resources; especially for natural forests over which a logging ban has been put years ago. Thus, NTFP utilization can have many positive impacts on rural livelihood. The rubber sector in Vietnam includes both larger corporate forests and plantations managed by smallholders. This standard will help to remove bottlenecks and boost the supply of FSC certified NTFPs such as bamboo, rattan, oil from community/ natural forests, and latex from rubber plantations which are increasing in demand in Vietnam, thereby supporting sustainable forest management.

The new IFSS for NTFPs for Vietnam shall not be used as a stand-alone standard, it supplements the FSC National Forest Stewardship Standard of Vietnam FSC-STD-VN-01-2018 with specific NTFP-related indicators. It has been developed following INT-DIR-20-007_13 so organizations can certify NTFPs in their management units.

Consumers Voice their Frustration with the Push to Digital by Corporate Service Providers

Keep Me Posted (KMP) is a global advocacy campaign working for the right of every consumer to choose, free of charge, how they receive important information from their service providers – on paper or electronically. Overseen by Two Sides North America, the KMP North America campaign focuses on educating and challenging corporations that are removing consumer choice and charging fees for paper. KMP compiled online and email comments from a survey by Consumer Action and the Keep Me Posted and Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications websites. The comments were compiled into the latest KMP fact sheet to demonstrate why paper documents are important to millions of North American consumers. The testimonials had common themes as to why consumers want the choice to continue to receive paper documents.

Joseph Lawson, Major Driver of APRIL’s Sustainable Forest Management Policy

Since Asia Pacific Resources International Holdings Limited, or APRIL, a leading pulp and paper manufacturer, adopted a sustainable forest management policy in 2014, its stakeholder advisory committee has played an important role in advising and monitoring the implementation of the company's commitment across the social, environmental and governance spheres, as well as engaging regularly with nongovernmental organizations to listen to their views. The committee, which by its constitution is independent of the company and comprised of national and international experts on forestry, social issues and business, meets three times a year. It also appoints an assurance provider to evaluate APRIL's sustainable policy implementation. In its 2018 report, the stakeholder advisory committee reviewed the full four years of APRIL's efforts in responsible fiber supply, landscape-level conservation and restoration of natural forest, reduction of forest fires, transparency and supplier compliance with the sustainable forest management policy.
