West Fraser and Mercer Announce Dissolution of Cariboo Pulp and Paper Joint Venture

West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. (“West Fraser”) (TSX and NYSE: WFG) and Mercer International Inc. (“Mercer”) (NASDAQ: MERC) announced today an agreement to dissolve their 50/50 joint venture in Cariboo Pulp and Paper. West Fraser will continue as the sole owner/operator of the mill, doing business as Cariboo Pulp and Paper Company.

Located in Quesnel, British Columbia, Cariboo Pulp and Paper has the capacity to produce up to 340,000 tonnes of high-quality Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK) pulp annually, employing nearly 300 people.

Packaging Corporation of America Reports First Quarter 2018 Results

In the Packaging segment, total corrugated products shipments with one less workday were up 6.0% and shipments per day were up 7.7% over last year’s first quarter. Containerboard production was 953,000 tons, and containerboard inventory was down 23,000 tons from the fourth quarter of 2017 and up 31,000 tons compared to the first quarter of 2017, primarily due to the addition of recently acquired Sacramento Container. In the Paper segment, office paper and printing and converting paper sales volumes were up 33,000 tons compared to the first quarter of 2017, and production volume was up 10,000 tons primarily due to no scheduled maintenance outages in the first quarter of 2018. Resolute Forest Products Announces Newsprint Price Increase

We are announcing a US$40/metric tonne (for 45.0 gsm) newsprint price increase to be phased in over two months. The price will increase US$20/metric tonne effective with shipments on or after January 1, 2021 and a second US$20/metric tonne increase will be implemented with shipments on or after February 1, 2021. Other basis weights will be adjusted accordingly.
