Catalyst Paper receives US EPA 2021 SmartWay Excellence Award

Catalyst Paper, a Paper Excellence company, was honoured with a SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency.

Catalyst partners with SmartWay carriers that share the same values in environmental leadership. These carriers invest in energy efficient lightweight equipment that allows Catalyst to plan and load equipment to maximum capacity to reduce the number of trucks and railcars shipped.

“I’m proud of our Logistics team and the staff at the Surrey Distribution Centre for achieving this SmartWay designation and their outstanding performance this year focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions through more efficient shipping,” said Hamish Doughty, Vice President, Supply Chain.

Catalyst Paper was one of 12 shipper and logistics companies to receive this distinction, representing the best environmental performers of SmartWay’s nearly 4,000 Partners. This year’s awards were announced at a virtual press event hosted by the EPA with its SmartWay Partners, key stakeholders and media in attendance.

Sustainable forest certification gives consumers confidence

Sustainable forest certification on paper and packaging is a reassuring sign for earth-conscious consumers. This certification means the manufacturing process won’t threaten the long-term health of forests. Wood is one of our greatest renewable resources, so it’s important that creating pulp and paper doesn’t contribute to widespread deforestation in North America. Fortunately, net forest area in the U.S. has increased over the past three decades, and remained stable in Canada. Sustainable forest certification is an important tool for ensuring responsible harvesting and manufacturing. That’s why we were early supporters of using third-party certification that ensures wood is responsibly sourced. Supply chain transparency offered by certification has existed for nearly 30 years — far longer than similar standards for other commodities.

New certification bodies accredited against FSC standards

Assurance Services International (ASI) has accredited two new certification bodies, GCL International Ltd. (GCL) and Legallis certification to audit and issue FSC certificates. The two certification bodies were each evaluated by ASI and demonstrated their ability to conduct impartial assessments to issue FSC certificates according to the established criteria. Legallis will be able to audit and issue: *forest management certificates in the Ukraine and, *chain of custody certificates worldwide, excluding Belarus, China, United States of America and Canada. GCL will be able to audit and issue FSC chain of custody certificates (excluding controlled wood) worldwide, excluding Belarus and China.
