University of Oulu and Metsä Group cooperate in research and education to develop sustainable forest industry

University of Oulu and Metsä Group have entered into a partnership agreement in which research and educational cooperation will be deepened in order to develop sustainable forest industry. The aim is to increase interaction and work life contacts between students and the company. The co-operation includes, for example, visiting lectures, company visits, thesis work and internships.

The themes of the joint research projects are the utilization of inorganic production sidestreams from the forest industry, for example as bioproducts, and the development of autonomous solutions and automated logistics in the wood, pulp, paperboard and sawmill industries. Experiments and solutions for the introduction of the technology utilize the university’s extensive research expertise in 5G / 6G, IoT and cyber security, robotics, fibre and particle technology, and process technology.

“Metsä Group offers long-term and modern jobs for experts in various fields. We want to ensure the best experts for the future for our various tasks, solve technological and sustainability related challenges, and utilize new and more efficient technologies. Through research collaboration, we create new know-how and effectiveness by applying research results in practice,” says Kaija Pehu-Lehtonen, Metsä Group’s pulp and sawn timber business, Metsä Fibre’s SVP Business Development.

WISA plywood’s Environmental Product Declarations help to understand the environmental impact of construction material throughout its whole lifecycle

UPM Plywood has published Environmental Product Declarations for their WISA products, in compliance with the standardised EPD model. These third-party-verified and internationally comparable Environmental Product Declarations help building contractors and designers better understand the environmental impact of construction products and materials. An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a voluntary and reliable way to present a product's environmental impact throughout its whole lifecycle, from raw material sourcing to disposal. UPM Plywood's Environmental Product Declarations have been created according to the EN 15804:2012+A1:2013 and ISO 14025 standards for four product groups: coated and uncoated spruce plywood, and coated and uncoated birch plywood. CANADIAN FOREST INDUSTRY CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS WITH FOCUS ON CLIMATE CHANGE

The forest sector also reduces dependence on fossil fuels by using residuals and byproducts to produce renewable energy. In addition, forest products such as biomaterials and bio-chemicals store CO2 and can replace products made from materials with a heavier carbon footprint. This storage can also be prolonged through recycling.
